"rmmod at76c503-rmfd" will hopefully unload the old driver. You might need to "ifconfig wlan0 down" first if it complains about the driver being busy/in use. Once you remove the old module, just copy the new binary into place ("make install" ought to work) then hopefully your usb hotplug will load the new driver.
