Problems with SMC 2662W

Hi!

I'm trying to get my SMC2662W wireless usb to work with kernel 2.6.2, but
I'm having a lot of trouble.

Some background:  I've used this adapter with an earlier Debian
installation, kernel 2.4.18 or so, using the usbvnetr drivers from the
atmelwlan package.  Tried doing the same on a new SuSE and new hardware,
but kept having the machine hang, even after turning off usb-uhci.  Finally
upgraded to 2.6.2, which seems stable.  I'm writing this from the Windows
side of my box, so the adapter still works.

I've managed to get the usb.agent to recognize the driver by adding a line
to /etc/hotplug/usb.usermap.  However, when I plug in the adapter, the
hotplug output shows that it finds the device and then writes the usb
interface name to /var/run/hotplug/net, from where it is never picked up.
I'm not sure where to poke to get it picked up, hotplug network is turned
on, the drivers mentioned in the net list for it.

But that's just half the battle.  When I try to start the connection by
hand, using ifup wlan-usb, it says "Interface 'wlan' is not available",
even though iwconfig and ifconfig show nothing but lo.  What could cause
this?
