My PowerBook running OSX. I have been using ad-hoc mode. I tried setting up
my PowerBook as a software base station and using managed mode but couldn't
connect. As ad-hoc mode sort of worked I stuck to that for the time being.

The MA101 is connected to a Toshiba laptop, I set an ip address up on this
using ifconfig. I am then able to ping backwards and forwards between
machines with no problem. I can them ssh into the Toshiba and all looks good.
However, after a minute or two ssh and ping hang.

Up until now I was rebooting, but I will try your suggestions to see if
either works.
