Please post the output of lspci on the Toshiba laptop for the USB
controller; there was a problem with an old revision of it.
If possible, try out if the problem remains with an PCMCIA USB
controller.

I've never used Mac OS X, but doesn't it show the result of a scan during
WLAN startup (like the "site survey" of the Atmel Win drivers)?
Or the BSSID of the network connected to afterwards?
If yes, simply re-start WLAN on the PowerBook after the MA101A hangs and
watch if it finds the MA101A with the BSSID reported on the Toshiba by
iwconfig.
