Yes that works. Strangely, the times between the link dying seem to be longer
after every time of doing this.

That caused a kernel panic!!!! Tried it again and the same thing happened.

If I understand correctly then yes. I run a stumbler app on my PowerBook,
this 
can see the signal present even after the connection has died.
