Newbie Needs Help! - Unresolved Symbols Problem

Dear All,

I am a very experienced PC user - but only with MS Windows. I want to experience the joys of Linux but it is very hard to go back to being a *complete* novice again. I have installed RedHat Fedora v1.0 and so far I am very happy with what I have seen. However, this machine is connected to my broadband cable connection via a USB wireless adapter (Belkin F5D605u) which works very happily under Win 98 on the same machine.

So far I have been totally unable to get it to work in Linux despite the very determined efforts of an extremely helpful chap I found via another board. Without an Internet connection, Linux will be - to me - little more than an interesting academic exercise, and certainly not the useful tool I had hoped for....

I have downloaded the at76c503 driver from http://at76c503a.berlios.de and with the help of my friend tried to install it. After much difficulty I also found an RPM and tried installing that (after first uninstalling the manual one). Neither work - but after installing the RPM I find that RedHat's GUI "hardware browser" finds a Belkin F5D605 device and lists it under the "system devices" category with an at76c503 driver. RedHat's "Internet configuration tool" however does not find the Belkin and is unable to establish a wireless connection.

modprobe shows unresolved symbols:

and iwconfig shows no device present.



Now. I saw on the  http://at76c503a.berlios.de/support.html support page something that said that unresolved symbol errors may be caused by a difference between kernel sources and the running kernel. Now, I don't really understand what that means, nor do I understand how to find out whether or not it is the case with me... (BTW - I have a virtually fresh install of RH Fedora. I have done nothing to it and as far as I know the kernel and the sources came from the same CD).



Could some kind soul point me in the right direction with easy to follow steps? (think six-year-old!)



I would really appreciate some help here.
