WUSB11 v2.6 causes system to freeze

First off, I apologize if posting to both the SF forum and the mailing
list is considered bad etiquette. Some places would regard it as such, but
I have seen nothing to suggest that it is here.

I'm using a Linksys WUSB11 v2.6 wireless adapter, with a Biostar M75NCD
Pro mainboard. The distro I'm using is a stage3 Gentoo install.
Whenever the adapter is plugged in and I use modprobe to load usb-ohci and
ehci-hcd (usb modules for my board), the computer freezes. All my USB
slots are USB 2.0, could this be the problem?
I have tried both the driver hosted on SF (this one) and the driver hosted
on Berlios, neither work. The problem does not occur Fedora Core 1, which
is what I'm using now.

Does anyone know how I can fix this? I would much rather use Gentoo, but I
can't until I have a working internet connection with it.
Any help would be _greatly_ appreciated, as I'm at my wits end.

I should point out that I've tried kernels 2.4.25, gentoo's 2.4.25, and
2.6.4, none worked.
The freezes also seem to occur randomly - sometimes it freezes as soon as
the module is loaded, and sometimes it waits a few seconds before
freezing.
I'm not sure if this is relevant, but the same problem occured on a
different computer with RedHat 8 whenever I compiled a custom kernel, the
problem was fixed in RedHat 9 beta 1 and all later versions of RedHat. I
tried using the Fedora Core 1 kernel config file to compile Gentoo's
kernel, thinking that it might fix the problem, but the problem still
occured.
