OK - Sorry to bombard the list but this is positively the last bit of
info I can give at the moment.

This is the result of booting with the Belkin unplugged but the
etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-wlan0 file in place. Connecting the
Belkin causes an instant system lock-up. This is the output from
/var/log/messages. I'm not sure it helps....
