I think it depends on AP configuration. Now you mentioned the AP was
accepting non authenticated adaptors but I probably missed it in AP's
configuration. My understanding is that restricted should include
authentication. Otherwise one could simply enable encryption and set it
open system.

I found out iwpriv could set authentication after I issued that message
with the suggested patch. Still by following the code trying to figure
out what could be wrong it seemed to me the code that sets restricted is
flawed as open configuration always overrides restricted and I presume
that wasn't the driver author's intention. Of course I might be wrong.
Enter the driver maintainers.
