problems with Belkin F5D6050 on debian sarge

I am trying to install a driver for my Belkin F5D6050.  My distribution
is debian sarge, which is kernel 2.4.22.  This Belkin unit works fine
on the machine when running Windows '98 and using the Belkin drivers
off the CD.  Unit has a small white sticker on the back that says "ver.
100" and "Made in Taiwan 146000013700E R03 MH" is printed near the
bottom of the underside.

I believe I have compiled the drivers successfully, but I am not sure. 
I get the following error messages when using the two different
drivers:

with atmelwlanddriver-source package:

insmod usbvnetr.o, dmesg shows the following:

I get the exact same problem when using the latest release from the
sourceforge website.

symbols when I try to install the driver:

Any ideas have how to debug this?  It just says "vnet_kernel.c: Get
configuration failed", but it doesn't say what to do about it.  The
driver is matching when I insert the USB cable.  But then maybe there
is a problem loading the firmware?  The device initialization fails. 
Then when I do a soft-reboot into windows, the adapter doesn't work.  I
have to unplug and re-plug and then it works again in windows.
