RE: Atmel-wlan-usb Digest, Vol 7, Issue 2

Maybe you could help me out.  I have very little experience with Linux, but
am learning fast.  Have an HP Pav notebook, P-C 2.4Ghz, 512 DDRAM, Via Rev 5
USB 2.0 controller, and the same IBlitzz BWU613B you mentioned.  I have
tried nearly everything I can think of (which probably isn't much), and
still get nothing on Redhat 9 with all the updates.  Sys logs show that no
driver has claimed the device, upon connecting it.

Hello all,

I just got the said device running on kernel 2.6.4 using the "berlios"
driver.

Only, iwconfig always gives me Link Quality 0/0 ; don't know if this is a
small or a big number :)

However, this device (AIN Comm. AWU2000b) should be included into the device
list with the chipset known to be at76c505_rfmd2958 and the berlios driver
known to be working.

For the records, there's a problem with my VIA MVP3 chipset: the USB host
controller (VIA rev 2 in Windows language, 1106:3038 (rev 02) in lspci -n)
cannot work with that USB stick; even under Windows XP it tells me so (error
10 or something along that line).
Under Linux, the firmware cannot be uploaded. Someone with that hardware
combo and more luck please tell me.

Unfortunately, this MVP3 chipset also has a problem with USB2.0 (EHCI) PCI
adapters based on VIA -- using one of them the system locks up (freezes);
this is not a bug in the 2.6 uhci_hcd driver (which was the 'good' uhci
alternate JE driver in 2.4 times, not the 2.4 "uhci_ucd").
WinXP also locks up; it's also seemingly not a config error since I just
threw out about all other cards, swapped PCI slots and such).  [ARGH] So you
cannot use this controller with my main board (no VIA USB on a VIA chipset
main board - funny :( ).

I then tried an OPTi OHCI USB host controller. ( PCI device id 0xc861,
chipset Opti 82c861).
The error message "WARNING: OPTi workarounds unavailable" is very important
- using this USB host controller I always had the atmel driver tell me there
were frames from mars and after some network traffic I needed to
Debian-"ifdown wlan0" and "ifup wlan0" to have another 2 minutes period of
wireless networking.

Now I got another two cards one of them being another Opti OHCI controller,
using a 82c862 chipset.
But I didn't try it - and I won't, I'm sorry. I've been working for days to
get myself a working USB host controller card. I won't touch the running
system again.

And now here is the one out of four tested (and one nontested) USB
controllers that's actually working:
A NEC PCI controller (USB 2.0, EHCI) with PCI ID 1033:00e0.
(children 1033:0035).
I didn't compile the EHCI stuff in, but EHCI seems to be backwards
compatible. To get full USB 2.0 I will compile EHCI into the kernel soon ---
however, I'm currently testing it and while writing this on a remote (via
WLAN) machine I'm watching a movie and am scp'ing some huge file for fun and
testing. The controller works like a charm as UHCI, I'd expect it to also do
so as EHCI.

Ah, and while at it: on the other end there's a Sony Vaio laptop, USB
Controller: Intel Corp. 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 USB (rev 01),
8086:7112 (rev 01) which worked flawlessly from day one.

Bottom line is: I had a lot of trouble with the sourceforge driver before I
actually understood that it didn't compile under 2.6 anyway.
I didn't find the USB IDs in that driver. I did have a lot of USB related
problems. The Berlios driver compiled and worked out of the box, it's
trustworthy :) Only I was too tired to find my USB ID in the driver in the
first 5 hours. That was my own fault, however.
