obviously we own the same device, which does not mean, that we own a
device with the same chipset.

I always thought, that the intersil radio chip is not supported by the
newest drivers, so I used the the snapshot 20021209 from
http://atmelwlandriver.sourceforge.net, but currently I am using the
alternative drivers from http://innominate.org/kurth/at76c503/
which do work with iwconfig. I have no interest in powermanagement
either, so I have never tried very much fiddling with it.

Using the Kurth drivers satisfy me. Maybe you should give it a try.
