Newbie question -- Any NIC with programming manual available?

hello,

I want to write a driver for a PCI 10/100 NIC as a
class project.  I really don't want to look at the
existing code, but wanna do it from scratch.  Is
there a decent NIC that I can easily buy and get
its programming reference easily?

any pointers would be appreciated.
