Hi. I've finally got this working, thanks. Perhaps I now know what was 
the problem. I originally installed wammu from the openSUSE 13.1 default 
OSS repository. That ought to pull in any additional dependencies. 
However, after typing gammu --help in the console and getting 'command 
not found', I had another look in the package manager. gammu was *not* 
installed, so I added that.

I reconnected the phone in Phone Mode, and when I then launched wammu 
and tried Automatically search for phone, after a bit of a delay, it 
found it without requiring any specification of the device / port. I've 
now been able to configure my phone and exchange files.

So should gammu always be a required dependency for running wammu? Or is 
a version of gammu included in the wammu package? I ask because I 
originally posted the contents of the About dialog, which said it was 
'Using python-gammu 1.33.0 and Gammu 1.33.0', yet gammu wasn't installed.

One small issue - the exported XML messages fail to open in a web 
browser (Konqueror or Firefox). Firefox produces this error message:

I exported them instead as a mailbox file and can now view them in 
Thunderbird. My MMS messages are not downloaded from the phone, but it's 
not a big deal, there are only a few.
