Thank you for responding to my question.

I have given up on trying to get the N79 to work  I tried to get N70/E6-00 
and a E90 to work

all with the same message Gnokii serial_open: tcgetattr: Inappropriate ioctl 
for device I am using freebsd 10.0

I have written to the freebsd questions list.
