how to troubleshoot hanging ptal-connect?

When I try the following:

ptal-connect mlc:usb:psc_1200_series -print

It prints the message:
ptal-connect: connecting to device
"mlc:usb:psc_1200_series"... successful.

And then hangs forever without printing until I kill
it.

What steps would be recommended to troubleshoot this
problem?
I've looked through the 'setting up basic device
connectivity' and 'troubleshooting' sections of the
document, but haven't found a reference to this
problem.

I am running fedora core 1 with an hp 1210 printer.
linux kernel 2.4.22-1.2115.nptl,
I compiled/installed hp-oj 0.91 from source and used
rpm -e to remove the default version of hp-oj that
came with the distribution.

Thanks,

Ryan
