What do you mean "attach the printer to a machine that is not designed
to be a print server"? If you had many machines at home and a single
printer. What would you do? Print from only one machine? I do not intend
to argue but, in such an environment or setup what other options (no
additional purchase) does one have? and which ones are better suited?

It just happens that I have for compelling reasons attach the 4215xi to
the WinXP Pro box as it's closest to the printer location and has our
phone connection.

Simply sharing the HP Officejet 4215xi in WinXP Professional and trying
to print to it from Mandrake Linux 10 via Samba doesn't work as one
would expect!

Someone on this forum suggested disabling the bi-directional thingy in
Printer properties on the WinXP Pro machine. After I did that, I could
successfully print from the Linux machines using Samba.

In summary,
1. I installed and connected HP Officejet 4215xi to WinXP professional
machine.
2. I shared this printer over network by right clicking on the printer
and choosing "Share this printer over network". I *unchecked* the "Allow
bi-directional" checkbox in the Printer properties.
3. In Mandrake Linux 10 Official, I downloaded and copied the HP 4200
series PPD file from
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=HP-OfficeJet_4200
to /usr/share/cups/model/hp/ folder. You can rename it to hpijs.ppd and
gzip it.
4. I added a new printer in Mandrake Linux 10 Official using
Printerdrake. This printer's connection type was set to SMB with the
details of the remote WinXP computer filled in correctly and the printer
driver selected was HP 4200 Ghostscript/hpij (recommended) <- The one we
just installed in the previous step.
5. Print a sample Test page

Hope the above helps someone trying to install and use the HP Officejet
4215xi in a network environment. I am extremely impressed by it's small
size and great features.
