Installing a PSC2410 cold (no Windows in this home)

I just got a PSC2410 - and the installation instructions are limited to
Macintosh and Windoze -which wouldn't concern me that much except where
it states "Do not connect until instructed" respectively I am prompted
by the installation SW - which obviously isn't possible on my Linux
(Mandrake 10) machine.
Can I safely ignore these instructions or is there some magic to be
performed to make this work?  I.e printing and scanning.
