I've gone through and run the commands you suggested.  I have put my 
results after your suggestions.

This might be part of the problem.  That file doesn't exist.  I have no 
hpoj directory in /usr/share/doc, though I am told that hpoj is installed.

I hope that this helps.  I do have a question regarding hpoj, however.  
When I run the commands you suggest I am given a version number, but 
when I look at uninstalled packages under aptitude, hpoj 0.91-4 is 
listed as not installed.  I have been hesitant to install it because 
doing so uninstalls hplip.
