The flash reader should simply appear as a USB mass storage device, so
no special tools are needed. The current distributions simply mount it
automatically (and often show a desktop icon to quickly access it).

Get HPLIP from http://hpinkjet.sf.net/. If you have HPOJ installed
remove it before installing HPLIP. Once HPLIP installed and configured
run the tool "hp-toolbox" to see ink levels status, clean cartridges, ...
