Btw, I have a very similar firmware loading failure too. My card worked 
fine in the morning, then during the day I was on a wired connection, and 
in the evening when I tried reloading the drivers again (I unload them when 
not in use) it gave me this same error -5. It worked with no complains for 
very long time before, in two years that I've used this card I never saw 
this error. But the firmware is in the correct directories (I even tried 
putting it in all of the dirs listed in hotplug firmware agent file), sysfs 
seems to be up and running (it actually have the directories concerning 
ipw2200 driver too, with all the options visible, except for the firmware 
forder is empty). Hotplug seems to be working fine for all other purposes 
(though no other device requires external firmware loading). Any ideas what 
it could be?
