IPW2100: unable to connect to D-Link WAP

Hi -- I'm trying to get the IPW2100 interface in my Toshiba Satellite
M30 laptop working.  I'm running Ubuntu 'dapper', with kernel 2.6.16.20
compiled by me, with all the configuration requirements in the ipw2100
INSTALL file carefully obeyed.  I have built ieee80211 1.1.14 and
ipw2100 1.2.0 and installed them manually (i.e. "make ; make install" --
no .deb packages).  I have wireless-tools "27+28pre13-1ubuntu2"
installed.

Oh, and I'm trying to connect to a D-Link DI-524 (cheap home
router/access point) that has worked fine with a couple of friends'
assorted Mac laptops.

Executive summary: it works unencrypted, but as soon as I enable WEP, it
doesn't work.  Yes, I have double-checked and triple-checked the key.
And I have changed the key to a trivial value that doesn't require
laborious double- and triple-checking.  Still no luck.

Details: here's the relevant stanza from /etc/network/interfaces:

Here's what iwconfig reports:

  No working leases in persistent database - sleeping.

(It takes a bit over a minute to fail.)

However, if I set the D-Link WAP to "Security: disabled" and run

  iwconfig eth1 key off

then "ifup eth1" works: I get back a DHCPOFFER quite quickly, and all is
well.  Except for the total lack of security, of course.

I would appreciate any hints on how to debug this problem.  Thanks!
