default configuration values on FC?

When using the network device configuration tool in FC 5, I noticed something.

The default values given for the device using this tool have been wildly wrong.

for example, under the Wireless tab, the channel, transmit rate and mode have all been wrong and needed to be changed.

The most blatent example is that the tool often gives a default transmit rate of 0 when, which is obviously wrong. In my most recent problem I had to hardcode the channel for my wifi device, or it wouldn't work.

Where is fedora's config tool getting these values? Why would they be wrong so often?
