ipw2200 disabled?

I have an unusual problem with an ipw2200 on a thinkpad t43.

After months of successful operation with wireless, I dual booted into
   Windows, and disabled wireless in the network connections
   (flying and trying to conserve battery). 

Ever since, I can't get the card to come online in linux, even though
   I dual booted back and enabled the card. The module loads, but no
   AP's are ever detected and the led remains off.

I've tried various combinations of loading the module with disable=0,
and multiple iwpriv set_power modes, to no avail.

I'm open to suggestions.
