I just copied the corresponding lines
IBM machine:
ipw2200: Detected geography ZZR (14 802.11bg channels, 0 802.11a channels)

Fuijtsu-Siemens laptop:
ipw2200: Detected geography ZZR (14 802.11bg channels, 0 802.11a channels)

At the moment I stop trying to get passive scanning working with the IBM 
machine because the Fuijtsu-Siemens laptop works fine with passive scanning. 
Unless nobody else reports problems with passive scanning I guess this is a 
problem with my machine and not a problem with all IBM R51 laptops. ;-)
