thanks, I continued searching the archives as per your suggestion and came across comments regarding 
(1) not unloading the module during a suspend, and (2) taking ipw2200 out of blacklisted modules 
even though the version number looked different.  by -really- leaving the module loaded I can keep 
it working through a suspend, including being able to rmmod/modprobe successfully after the resume.

the problem still seems quite strange, but I am happy to have found a working solution.
