I don't see any problems with it. I've been thinking about this some more, and I've started wondering if the problem could be originating from something else (i.e. hostapd or the ieee80211 stack). I noticed someone else on the list had some problems with CCMP which were resolved by upgrading to the latest version of ieee80211 (although I am running that version too). I also noticed that that version included some fixes for encryption on SMP machines, so although this isn't an smp machine (pentium M), maybe there's some relation.... I posted the issue to the hostapd list a while back, but didn't get an answer. I may be on the wrong track, but please let me know if you think this sounds plausible and whether I should take up the issue elsewhere.
