debian etch + hotplug + 2.6.22 Firmware error

dear users, iam not subscribed to this list, so please put me in cc in further replies. currently iam running debian etch with a selfmade 2.6.22 kernel without! udev and with the good old hotplug. (maybe this is the stombling block). my ipw2100 card works very well before i changed from 2.6.18 to 2.6.22. the error i get is: ipw2100: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 Network Connection ipw2100: eth1: Firmware 'ipw2100-1.3.fw' not available or load failed. ipw2100: eth1: ipw2100_get_firmware failed: -2 ipw2100: eth1: Failed to power on the adapter. ipw2100: eth1: Failed to start the firmware. ipw2100Error calling register_netdev.
