Hi, Here is a patch[1] to make ipw2200 interface "down" by default. This patch moves the firmware loading and card initialization from dev->init to dev->open and de-initialize it in dev->close. This makes the ipw2200 card consume much less power when it is not used. Hence the patch makes users and PowerTop[2] happy. If you'd like to help, please try this patch. Note after loading the module, (if there is no other network daemons like NetworkManager in the background), you need to open the interface manually. f.e. `ifconfig eth1 up` before using the interface. The benefit is: if you are not using the wireless interface, bring it down (manually or via some scripts), it will consume much less power.
