well, 1st attempt was made with disagreement between ipw and ap wrt 
encryption, then it succeeded with enc=on (seems WEP?). So, either 
you switched config on the fly on either the ap or ipw, or your wpa_supp
config has multiple entries, and eventually wpa_supp took the good one. 
I guess the driver didn't flipped enc=off ->enc=on on it own :)
