It seems that the following problem is caused by the hardware of the desktop
I am using. It was reported as bug 679 of IPW2200 driver and Carlos said
that the problem seems to be the kernel not initializing the Mini-PCI slot
properly. I have no problem with this card on another desktop with the same
kernel version.

Thanks,
-Bo

Hi,

I am using the following card with kernel version 2.6.28.7

00:13.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2915ABG
[Calexico2] Network Connection (rev 05)
    Subsystem: Intel Corporation Device 1050
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 32, IRQ 18
    Memory at dd000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4K]
Capabilities: [9c] Power Management version 2
    Kernel modules: ipw2200

The firmware cannot be loaded successfully and dmesg shows
