I believe that the standard driver for ubuntu is the ath5k driver, which 
is different from the madwifi driver in many respects, first and 
foremost, as to your inquiry, in that it is not configurable via wlanconfig.

You have two options:

1) if you only need for your netbook to provide access for short periods 
of time, use Ubuntu's Network Manager applet to "Create new Wireless 
Network", effectively establishing an ad-hoc network with your One 
acting as gateway to the internet.

2) if it is intended as a long-term solution, use hostapd to create a 
wpa or wpa2 wireless access point on your One (there are docs for that 
elsewhere), noting that ath5k devices cannot be put into master mode by 
iwconfig, but will let hostapd do it for you. You need to specify the 
driver "nl80211" in the hostapd.conf file.
