The only way to use master (AP) mode is to create an interface in master
mode. This could be done with wlanconfig, but the easiest way would be
to use the autocreate parameter for the ath_pci module:

rmmod ath_pci
modprobe ath_pci autocreate=master

This is described in the README file in the MadWifi sources.
