Madwifi on nanostationM

I'm running openwrt backfire on an ubiquity nanostationM5-loco and
would like to use a madwifi driver.  Chipset is ar72xx.  Has anyone
done this and can point to some documentation?  I can't get openwrt to
use this driver automatically and need a manual procedure And a list
of packages/modules required.  Thanks!
