Can you do a iwconfig ath0 and verify that the ESSID you specified  does 
indeed get set. Typically, you would use iwconfig to specify all the 
parameters and then do a "sudo ifconfig ath0 up" to commit those changes

Another thing to look out for is whether the AP has been configured to 
be a DHCP server. If not, youll have to set up the IP on the client 
manually.
Does the AP also require some security key?
