I believe you have some other wireless drivers loaded.  MadWifi would 
not do it.  MadWifi would create wifi0, which is the master interface, 
and ath0, with is a networking interface (a VAP in MadWifi terms).  ath0 
should be used for everything other than creating and destroying VAPs by 
wlanconfig.

This is described in MadWifi README.

If you want a more detailed reply, you should specify essential details, 
such as versions of the kernel and MadWifi and which drivers you are 
actually using.
