hsf modem speed

Hello!

I got my hsf modem working with suse9.2, but the max transfer rate is
1.5KB/sec.
I think i have read it somewhere, that you will need to buy the proper
driver in order to have its full ~5KB/sec speed.

Is this true? Is that not a bit cheeky?!
Are there no workarounds?
