modem hangs up in few minutes

I have an Apple ibook running 10.3.7. When I try to retrieve e-mail on 
Apple Mail, the computer starts to retrieve my mail but after about one 
minute I get a message under Internet Connect saying - the modem has 
unexpectedly hung up. Please verify your settings and try again. Help!
