hsfconfig complains about CONFIG_SERIAL_CORE

I'm trying to install hsfmodem-7.18.00.05full. The make install goes ok, but hsfconfig complains that CONFIG_SERIAL_CORE is not set. I am running linux 2.4.29 on a Slackware 10.1 system, and I checked the kernel configuration. The 8250/16550 support is enabled. Did a grep -R CONFIG_SERIAL_CORE * in my /usr/src/linux directory, and got results only in arch/arm. I don't see any way to enable this option in i386.
