FC4 on Inspiron 4150 notes

Hi,

here are some notes on using hsfmodem on an Inspiron 4150 running FC4.
modem is Conexant HSF softmodem ...

1) I built and installed the hsfmodem version 7.47.00.01full

1) I edited the /etc/modprobe.conf file to comment out the driver
conflicts. The hsfmodem correctly identifies the conflicts but does not
comment them out in this file. System hangs on boot if they are not
commented out.

2) After I boot, the system has loaded intel_8x0m modem driver, probably
because that is who the system thinks is responsible for the modem.
This is what I see with the sysconfig app "Hardware Browser" and there
is also a line in the /etc/sysconfig/hwconf:

--snip--
class: OTHER
bus: PCI
detached: 0
driver: snd-intel8x0m
desc: "Intel Corporation 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Modem Controller"
vendorId: 8086
deviceId: 2486
subVendorId: 14f1
subDeviceId: 5422
pciType: 1
pcidom: 0
pcibus: 0
pcidev: 1f
pcifn: 6
--snip--

3) I must do "rmmod intel_8x0m" after boot. Then I do the following:
hsfconfig --rcstop
<throw salt over my right shoulder>
hsfconfig --rcstart
hsfconfig -i (shows the driver is loaded)

this works 50% of the time, the other 50% the system hangs (presumably
at modprobe, I've not got kernel debugging sorted yet.)

4) Modem functions fine while initialized, using the "AT &F \N5"
init string

5) Occasional hangups are reported due to the following error reported
in /proc/driver/hsf/0/lastcallstatus:
<TERMINATION CAUSE=Disconnect frame>

Q1) Is this the 4K frame problem you have provided an alternative
kernel for?

Q2) Any ideas how to improve the modprobe hangs system problem?

Cheers!
Ann-Marie
