HSF modem dies randomly

Hello all.

I have the full version of the drivers installed.  It seems that whenver I
try to send email through gmail my modem stops working.  It pretends nothing
is wrong, so I try to restart it using the init script (I'm on gentoo).  I
get "ERROR: module hsfpcibasic2 is in use".  When I try to rmmod -f the
module my terminal hangs.  Here is the relevant part of my dmesg:
