Hi, first of all, a "modulation" is a standard on how to send data, and there is more than one of these modulations for modems. Probably the most common one today is V.92. There is more information about that at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modulation When there is no valid license installed, the HSF driver will simply never select a modulation that would result in a connection faster than 14.4kbps. A bug could be present in the modulation currently used by the driver and if you install a license, another modulation is likely to be used to get an higher connection speed and could also be used as a workaround for the bug, if this is an actual modulation related issue. The source of stability issues with the driver are often modulation specific. The modulation code is provided by Conexant and we periodically add the changes made by Conexant to the HSF driver to hopefully solve these remaining problems. It's not possible to enable to dump more debugging information in the driver without having the source code unfortunately. Since we have recommended you to buy a license to solve a problem with the driver, if the license doesn't solve it, we will refund your purchase.
