Got my sound back after hours of tinkering.

This finally did it.

sudo aptitude --purge reinstall linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils linux-image-`uname -r` linux-ubuntu-modules-`uname -r` libasound2

I took out the modem and it is no longer in dmesg. Must be an IRQ conflict. I can probably fix that through BIOS settings.

But I still have no sound. I guess it is restore time.

I am also shopping for an external fax modem.

You didn't say what distribution you are using but it appears to be Debian
or Ubuntu. When I removed the hsfmodem package from my Xubuntu system I had
the same result, until I searched the list of modules to be installed at
boot time and found that hsfmodem was still in the list. Removing it from
the list also removed all references to it from the dmesg report.
