wg511 trouble: PCI: ... unknown header 7f

I'm running 2.6.2 on an IBM TP600 and am trying to make a Netgear
WG511 work.

When I insert the card I get:

PCI: ... device has unknown header type 7f, ignoring.

If I boot a 2.4 kernel on it, it shows up in lspci as 
ffff:3890 1385:4800 (of course 0xffff is a bogus vendor id)

This seems like a pretty low-level problem;  seems like it could be 
either the card or the PCMCIA or BIOS in my laptop.  Any ideas?
