do you have firmware support in the kernel ("Hotplug firmware loading
support")? If built as a module, does lsmod list the firmware_class
module? You should get

Module                  Size  Used by    Tainted: PF
prism54                42440   1
firmware_class          6028   0  [prism54]

(among others, of course).
