3com card, how does one set the rate?

I've recently picked up a 3com OfficeConnect Prism54 based card 
(3CRWE154G72).  Have it working to some extent on a Sony Vaio running 
SuSE 9 Pro.  If I attempt to set the rate via 'iwconfig rate 11M' or 
some such, it reports 'Operation not supported.'

The reason I'm trying to change the rate is because I'm having some 
problems connecting to another box that has a pci 802.11b card.  I can 
ping my laptop from this box and then the laptop is able to ping the box 
back.  If I attempt to ping from the laptop first, I receive 'no route 
to host.'

Any suggestions as to how to get this working a bit better would be 
appreciated.
