I don't think the link is weak. I'm using very strong antennas and get a 
link speed from about 1 MB/s via rsync and openvpn. With nttcp without 
OpenVPN  My test setup look like:

debian woody <-> lan <-> router <-> wlan <-> router with hd.

The wlan link is secured with OpenVPN.
