Have you tried the rtl8139 driver?

mkdir /tmp/netdrivers/
cd /tmp/netdrivers/
ncftp ftp://ftp.scyld.com/pub/network/netdrivers.tgz
tar xfvz netdrivers.tgz
make
make install

You can use use 'mii-diag --watch eth0' to monitor the link and
negotiation status.
