rtl8139.c and 802.1q vlan

At http://www.geocities.co.jp/AnimeComic-White/6586/diff-rtl8139.c.txt
there is a diff against an _old_ version of rtl8139.c to
make it support 802.1Q vlans in Linux with an MTU of 1500...

I've had a look, and it looks like this code still exists
in the form described in the patch...

Is this patch unneccessary, or is there some other reason
it was not integrated? (The main thing it does is add
four bytes the the transmit bounce buffer size...)

I'm trying to track down a probable MTU problem with my
highly-VLAN'd network, and the 8139too driver's the only
one involved that doesn't specifically mention VLANs, and
I want to know if I have to modify the driver from Scyld
before I compile and install it to replace the 8193too
driver. (This is on a PowerPC if it makes a difference.)
