how to load rtl8139.o on a machine with no gcc?

Hi, all --

I have a SuSE 8.1 (2.4.19-4GB) machine with a very minimal Linux build,
and of the many things left off are gcc and friends.  I also, however,
have my SuSE 8.1 laptop (also 2.4.19-4GB) with a full development build
on it.  I hypothesize that SuSE detected the 8139 at installation time
because modules.conf had an '8139too' alias for eth0 (yes, I read the
rant :-) and it shows up in ifconfig but I get DEVICE BUSY when trying to
give it an address.

I tried pulling down the netdrivers-3.4.tgz file, extracting it, and
building the rtl8139.o driver; that seemed to go smoothly.  Then I copied
rtl8193.o and pci-scan.o and kern_compat.h over to the other box and
tried an insmod; pci-scan went fine, but rtl8139 did not.  I went ahead
and make /lib/modules/2.4.19-4GB/net and put all three files in there and
tried a reboot, but it still didn't work.  Not really surprised.

What can I do to get this NIC up and running on this minimal Linux build?
